PERIODONTAL (GUM) TREATMENT

Periodontal disease leads to tooth loss. Some signs of periodontal disease could be painful gums, bleeding during brushing, flossing or with applied pressure, pus, abscess, red and swollen gums, tooth mobility, bone loss, increased depth of periodontal pockets, and change of bite or occlusion. Some patients with the disease do not experience pain; therefore they do not seek help. A thorough evaluation takes into consideration the status of the gums. Dr. Sanchez and Dr. Vidal and their staff help their patients maintain their teeth with comprehensive periodontal treatments that may involve specialists in the field.

PROPHYLAXIS

The word prophylaxis means to prevent, to take care before anything wrong happens. This is exactly the purpose of this treatment, to prevent gum disease. A patient with good oral hygiene usually gets this cleaning twice per year.

DEEP CLEANING

This treatment is for patients that have advanced gum disease. The patient might have tartar under and over the gums, as well as bone loss. The presence of red, swollen, painful gums are not uncommon. Tartar is plaque that has not been properly removed over time and it has calcified. This tartar cannot be removed flossing since it is cemented to the teeth surfaces. The purpose of a deep cleaning is to remove the tartar and polish the teeth surfaces to make it harder for tartar to attach to in the future. The patient needs to be monitored with frequent cleanings after a deep cleaning, these are called periodontal maintenance cleanings.
