Can you believe itโs already February? 2017 is just marching right along. The general population knows February as the โlove month,โ with Valentineโs Day right around the corner. But for those in the dental industry, the second month of the year also marks National Childrenโs Dental Health Month, an initiative that raises awareness of the importance of oral health with our kids.
National Childrenโs Dental Health observances first began in February 1941, ย with a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio and a one-week event in Akron, Ohio. Since then, itโs grown into a month long, nationwide program that unites thousands of dental professionals, health care providers, and others to promote the benefits of good oral health to children as well as adults, caregivers, teachers and many more. This yearโs theme for the American Dental Association sponsored campaign ย is โChoose Tap Water for a Sparkling Smile.โ Local observances often include coloring and essay contests, health fairs, free dental screening, museum exhibits, classroom presentations and dental office tours.
Attitudes and oral health habits are usually formed at a young age, making it extremely important to start off on the right foot in order to benefit from good dental care for life. Colorful posters as well as activity sheets and other resources are available online at http://www.ada.org/en/public-programs/national-childrens-dental-health-month. Spread the word, and together we can help our children keep their bright, beautiful smiles for a lifetime!
